South Jordan • Chris Rogers says children should be dropped off on side of the street where they live.
The South Jordan councilman is proposing that the city make it a misdemeanor for a bus driver to drop off a child in a way that could potentially cause harm.
Rogers has asked that the city attorney review his proposal, which comes days after a 10-year-old girl was struck by a school bus.
Seleny Crosby exited a southbound bus on April 30 that had pulled into the shoulder of 4000 West near 10600 South. She was crossing the street when a second bus hit her. The Welby Elementary student suffered head injuries and died two days later with her family at her side.
The proposal was made at a Tuesday meeting of the South Jordan City Council, according to public information officer Chip Dawson. Council members, the mayor and some of the attendees wore pink ribbons in honor of Seleny.
"Council member Rogers feels strongly that children should never be dropped off from a bus on the street opposite of where they live," Dawson said. "He also feels that new policies and procedures can reduce this risk of something terrible like this happening again."
South Jordan and Jordan School District officials are planning to meet in June to review busing policies. No date for the meeting has been finalized.
