Some weekend road closures and freeway lane restrictions are coming to Bountiful this weekend to prepare to build Davis County's first newfangled "diverging diamond" interchange.

Crews will begin to remove sections of the Interstate 15 bridge over 500 South in preparation to replace the bridge.

So, 500 South will close there from 10 p.m. Friday to 9 a.m. Saturday, said Utah Department of Transportation spokesman Vic Saunders. Also, I-15 will be reduced then to one lane in each direction.

The diverging diamond to be built has cars temporarily drive on the "wrong" left-hand side of the road to eliminate left-turn signals and help speed traffic.

Nathan Peterson, UDOT project manager, also said that design efficiently moves "high volumes of traffic through an interchange without increasing the number of lanes."

Since 2010, UDOT has constructed diverging diamonds at Bangerter Highway and SR-201; I-15 in American Fork at Main St. and 500 East; and I-15 in Lehi at Timpanogos Highway. UDOT is also constructing DDIs at 1100 South in Brigham City and at exit 57 in Cedar City.
