A SWAT team standoff at a Clinton home ended with five people taken into custody late Wednesday morning.
Clinton police said three women and two men — including one 49-year-old male being sought on an aggravated assault warrant out of neighboring Roy, and another 49-year-old male arrested in connection with a car stolen in Idaho — surrendered shortly before 11 a.m. when they surrendered at the home, located near 1500 W. 1800 North.
Nearby schools were reportedly placed on lockdown as a precaution during the standoff of about four hours' duration.
Clinton Police Chief Bill Chilson said the incident began about 6 a.m. when his department was notified by Roy police that they had a warrant for a man believed to be at the address. When Clinton officers checked the residence, they also spotted a red car that proved to have been stolen out of Blackfoot, Idaho.
Learning that one of the men had been seen with a handgun earlier, Chilson said the decision was made to call for assistance from the Layton SWAT team. The unit arrived soon thereafter, but attempts to contact the occupants of the home by knocking on the door, telephone and through a bullhorn were unsuccessful.
Chilson said it was not until police deployed a "Bearcat," an armored vehicle with a ram on the front, near the front door and once more demanded the occupants come out, that the suspects — and one other man and two women believed unconnected with the alleged crimes of the fugitives — surrendered.
"That Bearcat finally got their attention, apparently," Chilson said.
The two suspects were booked into the Davis County jail pending charges, Chilson said.
No charges were brought against the other three detainees, who were released.
