Inside the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, a couple were being joined in holy matrimony. But outside, police had to pry apart another pair coupling on the church lawn.

Salt Lake City police say the entangled 56-year-old man and 60-year-old female paramour were witnessed in flagrante delicto, as it were, by four children from the wedding party at 174 E. 900 South. Enraged adults flagged down a passing officer.

Intoxicated and apparently oblivious to the arrival of police Sunday afternoon, the two transients refused to disengage and had to be pulled apart before they could be arrested, according to a probable cause statement.

Both were booked into the Salt Lake County jail, where they remained Tuesday in lieu of more than $2,000 bond each on suspicion of class A misdemeanor gross lewdness, class B misdemeanor trespassing and class C misdemeanor public intoxication charges.
