A Midvale motorcyclist has been charged with the manslaughter of his passenger in an August traffic crash in South Jordan.

Luis Enrique Tovar was driving a motorcycle Aug. 10 at about 55 mph — 20 mph over the speed limit — on 3200 West near 10950 South when he illegally passed another motorist in the center lane and crashed, police wrote in charges filed Wednesday. Tovar, 32, and his passenger, 29-year-old Tara Nicole Sheppick, were not wearing helmets, police have said. Tovar survived his injuries, but Sheppick died at a hospital.

Tovar was charged with second-degree felony manslaughter and other traffic violations.
