Canyons School District leaders plan to officially choose a new superintendent Tuesday evening.

The district’s board will meet at 5 p.m. at 9361 S. 300 East, in Sandy, to vote on a new leader for the 33,000-plus-student district. Whomever the board picks will fill the spot left by former Superintendent David Doty, who resigned in June to lead an education reform organization.

The board has already narrowed the field to three finalists. Those finalists include James Briscoe, superintendent of DeKalb Community Unit School District No. 428 in DeKalb, Ill.; Craig Hammer, executive director of secondary schools, Washington County School District, in St. George; and Kathryn McCarrie, assistant superintendent and chief performance officer for the Canyons School District.

In recent weeks, the board has been conducting additional interviews with the finalists.

Canyons officially split from the Jordan School District after a controversial public vote in 2007, becoming the first new Utah district in nearly a century.
