A Tooele man is accused of abusing and neglecting his parents, beating his 82-year-old father and leaving his immobile, 76-year-old mother to defecate in a bucket.

The father was taken to an emergency room April 17 after he reportedly fell and hit his head on a coffee table, police wrote.

But the father and mother both said the son hit the father; a CT scan showed possible bleeding on the brain due to past head trauma, police wrote. The father also had a fractured rib and infections because his adult diaper wasn't changed and was malnourished and dehydrated.

As nurses bathed and shaved the victim, they found more bruising on his face, a bruise consistent with choking on his throat, and a cut behind his ear, police wrote.

When officers went to the family's home, they smelled a "strong odor of urine and feces," investigators wrote. The son tried to stop the officer from entering because his mother "was using the restroom," police wrote. They found her sitting in a chair near a bucket of feces and a Mountain Dew bottle of urine; the woman said she uses those because she cannot walk to the bathroom.

The woman said her son fought with the father and "will pop him around" because the father yells and calls the family names, police wrote. The son said he grabs his father by the face to get his attention but denied ever hitting the father, police wrote. The son said the father's injuries came from his frequent falls.

The son, 56, was charged Wednesday with second-degree felony aggravated abuse of a vulnerable adult.
