West Valley City police help evacuate two families from burning home
West Valley City police officers helped evacuate 10 people from a burning home in Kearns early Wednesday.
Unified Fire Capt. Zack Robinson said officers were in the area near 4800 South and 4400 West at around 4:15 a.m. on a separate matter when they smelled smoke. They found a home with an attic on fire, and called firefighters before rushing inside to help evacuate the two families who lived there.
When fire crews arrived, it took them less than 15 minutes to put out the fire, Robinson said. Though they were able to keep the blaze just in the attic area, it is estimated the fire caused about $30,000 in damage.
All of the tenants were able to get out safely, Robinson said, but added that they likely won't be able to go home for a little while.
"It'll probably be a couple of days before they can get back in," he said. "It's quite a mess. Being that [the fire] was in the attic, there was a lot of insulation [removed.]"
Robinson said investigators were continuing to look into what caused the blaze.
