A Utah charter school has been ranked among the top 200 high schools in the country, according to a report released Tuesday.
U.S. News & World Report's annual rankings of the best high schools in the country lists InTech Collegiate High in Logan as the top high school in Utah and the 162nd best in the country.
Utah's other top five schools:
• The Academy for Math Engineering and Science, a charter school in Salt Lake City, was ranked as the second best school in Utah and 1,032nd in the country;
• Cedar City High was ranked third in Utah and 1,598th in the country;
• Desert Hills High in St. George was ranked fourth in Utah and 1,723rd in the nation;
• American Leadership Academy, a charter in Spanish Fork, was ranked fifth in Utah and 1,947th in the nation.
The report ranked schools based on overall student performance on state tests; how effectively schools educated minority students and those from low-income families; and participation and performance on Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate exams.
InTech was also ranked No. 1 in Utah in the report last year, though its nationwide ranking last year was 652. Last year, the Academy for Math Engineering and Science was ranked second in Utah; Logan High was ranked third; Timpanogos High in Orem was ranked fourth; and Mountain View High in Orem was ranked fifth.
Nationwide, charter and magnet schools took 155 of the top 500 spots. Charters are public, independent schools that limit enrollment. U.S. News & World Report worked with the American Institutes for Research to evaluate the schools.
