Salt Lake City police say anti-theft technology proved the undoing of a Gateway Mall shoplifter.
About 6 p.m. Monday, a 25-year-old male allegedly snatched an I-phone from the Hot Topic store. Mall security was notified and began tracking the phone's GPS signal as the thief moved through the mall grounds.
Detective Greg Wilkins said a Salt Lake City police officer then stationed himself at the phone's last known location and had mall security remotely activate the phone's alarm.
The officer approached the suspect who produced the phone, handed it to the officer and then bolted.
After a short foot pursuit, the officer caught the suspect, arrested him and booked him into Salt Lake County Jail on suspicion of theft, fleeing of police officer and several active felony warrants for assault, domestic violence, drunk driving and other charges.
