Woman found dead in Kamas shooting
First Published Apr 11 2014 06:00 pm • Last Updated Apr 11 2014 10:43 pm

A woman died Friday night in a remote and wooded corner of Kamas, but investigators were unsure if she took her own life or was killed by someone else.

Sheriff’s officials received a call about 5:15 p.m. that a person was shooting a weapon near a home at 3645 E. Weber Canyon Road, said sheriff’s Capt. Justin Martinez. Police quickly called a SWAT team, but canceled the call when they arrived and didn’t find a shooter.

Instead, deputies found a woman lying on the porch with a gunshot to the chest. Martinez described the woman as in her 20s to 30s.

Deputies, as well as two neighbors, performed CPR on the woman until a medical crew arrived and pronounced the woman dead at the scene, Martinez said.

Martinez said the woman lived at the home with her boyfriend, who was renting the house. At the time of the shooting, the boyfriend, who is also in his 20s to 30s, was with a friend looking at a nearby house that he was considering buying. Sheriff’s officials interviewed the two men, and were considering them witnesses as opposed to suspects.

Two neighbors initially found the woman after hearing her scream, Martinez said.

Sheriff’s officials were waiting for a warrant to enter the house in search of evidence. As of 8:30 p.m., they did not know who shot her or how and why she was shot. They also had not recovered a weapon.

"It appears to be deliberate," Martinez said. "We’re not sure if this is going to be a homicide or a suicide."

The home where deputies found the woman is a small, cabin-like building. The area is sparsely populated and sits between two pine-covered hills.
