A teenage skateboarder died Friday afternoon in Salt Lake City when a truck hit him in an intersection.

The collision happened about 2 p.m. in the intersection of 1300 East and Yale Avenue (about 1050 South), according Salt Lake City Police Detective Veronica Montoya. The teen was heading west on Yale while the truck traveled north on 1300 East. The boy died at the scene, Montoya said.

Investigators were still trying to piece together exactly what happened Friday, but Montoya said the boy — whose name and age had not been released — was apparently crossing in a crosswalk with flashing red lights that can be activated by pedestrians. Montoya did not know if the lights had been activated when the teen was crossing.

The accident led police to close the intersection to traffic in all directions. As of 3:45 p.m., the intersection remained closed.
