Falcons in downtown Salt Lake City lay second egg

The peregrine falcons nesting on the Joseph Smith Memorial Building in downtown Salt Lake City have added to their potential family.

And the whole world was watching via a webcam in nest box. The event was captured and can be watched on YouTube.

The female falcon deposited egg number two Thursday. The first egg of 2014 landed in the nest box early Tuesday.

Bob Walters, in charge of watchable wildlife programs for the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources, said the raptors typically lay eggs every other day.

If the falcons reach last year's total, other eggs will be laid sometime Saturday and Monday.

Live streaming video is available through the DWR's website.

The first egg in 2013 was laid April 12. The falcons from last year ended up laying four eggs, but only one hatched. That bird, named Solo, crashed into a building while learning to fly on July 3 and eventually died from its injuries.
