Hazardous spill closes North Salt Lake road
First Published Apr 10 2014 06:50 pm • Last Updated Apr 11 2014 11:22 am

A hazardous liquid spill closed part of a street in North Salt Lake on Thursday evening but did not pose a danger to area residents.

Two public works employees discovered liquid spilling out of a treatment barrel about 6 p.m., according to North Salt Lake Police Chief Craig Black. The liquid — which Black described as "an acid" — was running down 1100 North for about 50 yards, prompting police and hazmat crews to shut down the road between Main Street and Overland Road.

Black said the spill came from a plant that treats culinary water with chemicals. The cause remained unclear Thursday evening, though authorities have speculated it could have resulted from a broken pump.

Black did not know when the road would reopen. He added that the spill did not pose any danger and the road closure was used merely to give hazmat crews time to clean up the area.
