U.S. Postal Service will extend Tax Day pickups, offer kiosks
Avoid the headaches » Better to get those returns in early, P.O. advises.

Two northern Utah Post Offices plan to offer extended mail pickups for harried income tax filers trying to beat the April 15 deadline.

In addition, 31 postal self-self-service kiosks will be available around the clock for tax-filing procrastinators throughout the state, according to U.S. Postal Service spokeswoman Margaret Putnam.

On April 15, The Salt Lake Main Post Office, 1760 West 2100 South, will extend collection hours to 8:15 p.m., and the Provo East Bay Post Office, 936 South 250 East, will stretch its collections to 8:30 p.m. Customers dropping off tax returns at those locations are assured of receiving an April 15 postmark that will satisfy the Internal Revenue Service’s deadline.

However, Putnam strongly advised tax filers to do all they can to avoid the crowds of people who inevitably will wait until the last minutes to mail their returns by posting their returns early on April 15.

Reminders: First-Class letter-size postage is 49 cents for the first ounce and 21 cents for each additional ounce. If you use a larger envelope, First Class postage is 98 cents for the first ounce and 21 cents for each additional ounce. Customers wanting certification that their tax forms are received by the IRS, should mail them using Certified Mail Service.

If you do mail returns late on April 15, do so at the collection boxes located directly outside the Post Offices providing extended collection times.

Those who choose self-self-service kiosks can use credit or debit cards for postage and request a mailing label. Any label printed before midnight will receive the April 15 post mark.

Self-service kiosks can be found at these locations:

American Fork Post Office, 55 Merchant Street.

Bountiful Post Office, 20 S. Main Street.
