Federal and state parks and forestry agencies have announced an ambitious schedule for "prescribed," or intentional and controlled rangeland and forest fires, for southwestern Utah and neighboring northwestern Arizona this summer.

Targeted burn areas were listed on Monday by Color Country Interagency Fire Center officials for 16 sites.

The fires, meant to both reduce the potential for out-of-control wildfires and to rejuvenate new growth, will be occur only at times when weather conditions are favorable and adequate fire management resources are available, the center stated.

The list of prescribed burn candidates includes:

— The 10,000-acre Greenville Bench, on Bureau of Land Management holdings 6 miles south of Beaver.

— The 930-acre Pine Hollow (BLM) site 17 miles southeast of Kanab.

— The 211-acre Feral Pig site (BLM) on the Parashant National Monument.

— The 60-acre Aspen site (BLM) on the Parashant National Monument..

— The 106-acre Corner site (BLM) on the Parashant National Monument.

— The 132-acre North Sawmill site (BLM) on the Parashant National Monument.

— The 2,800-acre Pocket Mesa area of Zion National Park

— The 600-acre Cooper Central area (U.S. Forest Service) near Haycock Mountain.

— The 150-acre Duck Creek Aspen site (USFS) south of Duck Creek Village.

— The 150-acre Duck Creek Piles site (USFS) south of Duck Creek Village.

— The 80-acre Kings Creek site (USFS) southwest of Bryce Canyon.

— The 400-acre Ahlstrom Hollow (USFS) southeast of Panguitch.

— The 300-acre Dave's Hollow site (USFS) west of Bryce Canyon.

— The 250-acre Sunset North site (USFS) west of Hillsdale.

— The 637-acre Stump Springs (USFS) area southwest of Escalante.

— The 1,000-acre Pretty Tree Bench site (USFS) northwest of Boulder.
