The death of a woman whose body was found in Provo Canyon on Thursday no longer appears to be suspicious, Utah County sheriff's deputies say.
Investigators now believe Hadley Boberg, 20, was drinking Wednesday night in the South Fork area of Provo Canyon. Deputies found her body there on Thursday morning, along with an empty container of alcohol and "other evidence of alcohol consumption," Lt. Tom Hodgson stated Friday.
Deputies also found a male acquaintance in the vicinity, who was confused and evasive, leading investigators to suspect possible foul play.
However detectives later determined that the man, 21, was drinking with Boberg on Wednesday night when they lost the keys to her car.
"In an effort to locate the keys, both individuals received scratches and cuts as they navigated through the oak brush and trees," Hodgson said.
The pair became wet in the snow while temperatures at their elevation — 7,420 feet — dropped to 17 degrees.
At some point, Boberg laid down on the ground, where a deputy found her Thursday after reports from her family and friends that she had failed to return from a planned drive in the mountains on Wednesday.
The man had kept moving and was found nearby, still showing "signs of impairment from alcohol," Hodgson told The Salt Lake Tribune.
Preliminary findings from an autopsy confirm investigators' conclusions, Hodgson said.
