A West Valley City man was in serious condition Monday, two days after he fatally struck a moose and totaled his car on Highway 40 near Strawberry Reservoir.

The Utah Highway Patrol said the 61-year-old man's Saturn, traveling 65-75 mph, was westbound about 8:30 p.m. Saturday when the cow moose stepped into the road. The collision sent the animal up onto the hood, where it shattered the windshield and collapsed the car's roof.

The driver, initially in critical condition, suffered numerous cuts and other injuries. He was flown by helicopter to Intermountain Medical Center, where he reportedly was improving on Monday.
