An icy patch of highway led to a deadly chain reaction that killed one woman and left three semitrailer rigs and 11 cars wrecked Friday morning on Interstate 84.

Brooklynd Preator, 21, was driving a pickup west about 10 miles northwest of the Interstate 80 junction about 8:18 a.m. when she drove onto an icy spot caused by recent mountain snows and subfreezing overnight temperatures, said Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Todd Royce. The truck crashed in the center median.

When Preator got out of the pickup, a semitrailer truck reached the same icy spot and crashed into her and the pickup, Royce said.

About a dozen other vehicles also became involved in collisions as they reached the crash scene, Royce said.

Preator, who lived in Henefer, died at the scene. Two other people were seriously injured and taken to hospitals.

While work began to clear the wreckage, UHP closed down I-84 at mile post 111 and was diverting motorists to I-80 westbound at Echo. The closures ended about 4 p.m.
