A collision involving a Provo police car and a semi-truck Tuesday morning spilled flammable liquid and prompted the temporary evacuation of a downtown Provo park.
The accident happened about 11:10 a.m., when the police car was heading south through the intersection of 500 West and Center Street, according to Provo Lt. Mathew Siufanua.
At the same time, a Sherman-Williams paint truck was heading east on Center Street. The police car had its lights and sirens on, but the truck driver didn't see the police car and the two vehicles collided.
The truck was carrying highly flammable paint and acetone, about a gallon of which leaked out onto the ground.
By about 11:15 a.m., police were evacuating nearby Pioneer Park, located at 500 West Center Street. The evacuation lasted until about 12:30 p.m.
Siufanua said there were about a dozen people in the park at the time of the accident. He added that the fumes from the liquid were very strong, but the leak did not cause any injuries.
Both the police officer and the semi-truck driver were okay after the accident. The Utah Highway Patrol Troopers was investigating the accident. jdalrymple@sltrib.com
