A robbery suspect was caught even before the crime was reported Friday in Magna, where police noticed a masked man running down the street with a gun in one hand and the till of a cash register in the other.

The officers were driving on 8400 West about 12:45 p.m. when they spotted the man, said Unified Police Lt. Justin Hoyal. When they tried to stop him, he ran away. Officers cornered him outside a nearby home, Hoyal said.

Meanwhile, a clerk at a Chevron at 2700 S. 8400 West called 911 to report he had been robbed at gunpoint.

"The suspect ... demanded money, and the clerk obliged," Hoyal said. "Then the suspect demanded more money, but there was no more money. So he got frustrated and left."

The suspect was found carrying the coin compartments from the till, Hoyal said. He was booked into the Salt Lake County jail.
