A section of Interstate 80 in Parleys Canyon east of Salt Lake City was shut down for much of early Wednesday morning after a Federal Express delivery truck caught fire.

The driver escaped without injury when his semi rig's engine caught fire at 2:07 a.m. Wednesday near mile post 135, Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Todd Royce said.

Troopers closed down all eastbound lanes of I-80 through much of the night, reopening one lane about 6 a.m. All lanes were reopened about an hour later, though delays of 45 minutes or more were experienced by motorists as the morning commute got underway.

No other vehicles were involved.

Unified Fire Authority crews were dispatched to the scene to douse the flames, succeeding in saving the trailer and its cargo — though some of the packages reportedly sustained damage.

What caused the blaze was still under investigation.
