The Utah Highway Patrol suspects a medical problem contributed to a high-speed chase that only ended with a trooper forcing the driver off Interstate 15 near Payson.
The Monday chase, with speeds reportedly reaching 80 mph, began when the 62-year-old man's car sideswiped an SUV on southbound I-15 near Draper and then scraped another car near Lindon.
When troopers spotted the vehicle in Orem and tried to stop it, the driver reportedly kept going. Eventually, troopers laid tire spikes in the man's path, but he still drove on, even when smoke began to pour from his wheels.
Eventually, a UHP cruiser forced the man off the road.
UHP Sgt. Todd Royce said Tuesday that the man, who had not been charged, may been suffering from unspecified medical issues. He was taken to the hospital for evaluation.
The incident remained under investigation.
