A series of car crashes snarled traffic Thursday evening for commuters in Salt Lake City.

The most serious crash happened about 5:30 p.m. when several northbound vehicles on Interstate 15 collided near 1000 South, according to Utah Highway Patrol Trooper Todd Royce. One man in his 40s was taken to the University Hospital with serious but non-life -threatening injuries.

Royce did not know what caused the crash. By 6:40 p.m. authorities were making significant progress cleaning up the scene and Royce expected it to be clear soon.

Further north, a hit-and-run collision caused more headaches near 600 South on northbound Interstate 15. A pair of small, two-car crashes near 600 North extended the congestion all the way through the north end of the city.

Royce said there were no significant injuries resulting from the crashes as 600 South and 600 North.
