Cops nab last two youth work camp escapees

First Published Mar 06 2014 07:47 am • Last Updated Mar 07 2014 11:11 pm

The two remaining youths who escaped from a Draper juvenile corrections work camp were captured Thursday night.

Authorities picked up a 16-year-old Draper boy and a 15-year-old Sandy boy in Salt Lake City about 10 p.m., according to Department of Human Services spokeswoman Elizabeth Sollis. They were taken to a detention facility.

The boys were part of a group of four youths who escaped from the Genesis Youth Center on Tuesday night. The other escapees, an 18-year-old Vernal boy and a 17-year-old Lehi boy were arrested at a Maverik gas station in Orem on Wednesday.

All of the boys had been sent to the facility on court orders.

The DHS and law enforcement had released the identities of the two younger suspects because they were considered a danger to themselves and others, and to aid in their capture.

Now that they are in custody, The Tribune — consistent with the newspaper’s policy of not naming juvenile criminal suspects — is withholding their names.

The youths reportedly stole a 2004 Isuzu Ascender from the parking lot of the Burger Boys Restaurant in Lehi while its owner was inside getting food. That vehicle was not with the two teens arrested in Orem on Wednesday. It was unclear if it was recovered along with the two younger boys on Thursday.
