A 58-year-old woman was in serious condition Tuesday after surgery to treat leg and head injuries she suffered when hit by a semi-trailer rig in West Valley City.
West Valley City police Deputy Chief Mike Powell said that Karen Siler was hit by the big rig at 1:41 p.m. Monday while crossing 3500 South and Redwood Road.
At first, the semi’s driver reportedly claimed that someone else had hit the woman. However, nearby video security cameras, along with witnesses, indicated it was indeed his truck that struck her, police confirmed.
Investigators determined that Siler was legally walking north to south in the crosswalk on the east side of 3500 South when hit by the 49-year-old truck driver.
Powell said it appeared the driver had a green light as he made a right turn to head east on 3500 South.
Siler was hit about halfway across the road. She initially was in critical condition when transported to the hospital, where she underwent surgery late Monday. Police later said she had improved and was expected to recover.
Powell said investigators planned to screen charges against the truck driver, including failure to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk, with city prosecutors.
