FAA cites Utah helicopter company for violations

The Federal Aviation Administration is proposing a $55,125 civil penalty against Whirlybird Helicopters of Ogden for allegedly violating federal drug and alcohol testing regulations.

The FAA said in a news release Monday that Whirlybird failed to conduct pre-employment drug tests on eight employees who were hired to perform safety-sensitive functions on the company's helicopters.

The FAA also alleges that three of those employees were not in Whirlybird's random testing pool as required by federal rules.

The FAA noted that Whirlybird has 30 days to respond.
