Salt Lake City police were looking for a robber who used an assault-style, semi-automatic rifle to hold up a convenience store early Thursday morning.

Police dispatchers confirmed receiving a 911 call from the 7-Eleven store at 480 S. Redwood Road about 2:20 a.m. Thursday.

The suspect was described as a stocky, 6-foot Polynesian male in his 20s, wearing a blue checkered shirt, blue jeans and a blue stocking cap. He walked into the store with a dark blue gym bag, went inside the men’s room and then came out holding a rifle described as looking similar to an AK-47, police said.

The gunman demanded the clerk open the cash register, then emptied it and fled the store to jump into a waiting 1980’s model white Chevrolet pickup truck with a gold colored camper shell. The vehicle sped from the scene southbound on 500 South, police said.

The driver of the pickup was described as a male white adult with dark curly hair who wore a light tan jacket. The vehicle is described as an 80s-model, white Chevy truck with a gold or tan shell.

No shots were fired or injuries reported.

Anyone with information on this case is asked to call SLCPD at 801-799-3000.
