Mr. Sandman, bring me a dream. And for an alleged bank robber, it will be while snoring on a jail cot.
Salt Lake City police say that's the not-so-lyrical end for a suspect sought in three bank robberies this month.
SLCPD Sgt. Robin Heiden said the 37-year-old man, wanted for holdups at a U.S. Bank and two Key Bank branches between Feb. 7 and Feb. 20, apparently decided to take a nap about 10:30 a.m. Tuesday in the parking lot of a Maverik store at 1707 S. 300 West.
A clerk called 911 and officers arrived, approached the groggy man and identified him as their bank robbery suspect.
A probable cause statement claims that a subsequent search of him and his vehicle turned up 25 "twists" of cocaine and heroin, more than $3,700 in cash, and a scale and spoons; in his hotel room police found a handgun and clothing that matched that worn by the bank robber.
The suspect was booked into the Salt Lake County jail, where he remained Wednesday on suspicion of first-degree felony aggravated robbery, second-degree felony distribution of a controlled substance and class B misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia.
Police say that in each of the alleged robberies, the man allegedly indicated he was armed with a handgun, demanded and received cash from tellers, and then fled the scenes on foot.
