The 2,500 students of South Jordan's Bingham High School got an unplanned day off Tuesday due to problems with a natural gas pipeline outside the campus.
Jordan School District officials first cancelled Monday night's performance of the school's play, "Tartuffe," and as Questar Gas crews worked through the night to make repairs on the leaking line, the district cancelled Tuesday's classes at the 2160 W. 10400 South school.
Classes will resume Wednesday morning.
District officials said the decision to cancel classes came at Questar's request, citing concerns for the safety of students, faculty, staff and work crews.
However, Questar spokesman Darren Shepherd said the utility's crews determined early Tuesday morning that the leak was actually coming from a line on the school's property, somewhere between the meter and campus buildings. Repairs to that leak are the responsibility of Jordan School District.
Until those fixes are made, Questar shut off the flow of gas to the school.
The school had been cleared of personnel and students involved in after-school activities just before 5 p.m. Monday due to the leak. No injuries were reported.
District spokeswoman Sandra Riesgraf said a local contractor was on-site by mid-morning Tuesday to make the needed repairs.
The play was rescheduled for 7 p.m. Tuesday.
Information about a makeup day will be forthcoming, Riesgraf said.
