Armed woman, bang lead to central Utah school scare
First Published Feb 24 2014 06:43 pm • Last Updated Feb 25 2014 08:45 am

Schools in Monroe had a scare Monday afternoon when a blasting sound at the high school was followed by reports of a woman with a gun near the junior high school.

But the two events appear unrelated and no one was injured. The principal at South Sevier High School in Monroe reported the sound of an explosion about 2:45 p.m., said Sevier School District Superintendent Cade Douglas. Electricity was cut to the school at that point, Douglas said.

Shortly thereafter, staff at South Sevier Middle School reported a woman was carrying a gun about a block north of the school.

Both schools, along with Monroe Elementary locked down while authorities investigated. The blast at the high school is believed to have been a damaged transformer, Douglas said.

At the middle school, Sevier County sheriff’s deputies contained the neighborhood and took the armed woman into custody; she was threatening suicide, Douglas said.

The schools remained on lockdown about a half hour after their usual dismissal time, Douglas said.
