Copyright claims take down SLC Urban Iditarod Facebook page, but not the race
Though their Facebook page was recently taken down, organizers with the Salt Lake City Urban Iditarod wants to reassure participants that the March 1 pub crawl is still on.
Organizer Josh Anderson said Friday afternoon that the Facebook page — their only form of communication with the throng of participants — was removed after the Alaskan Iditarod reported their page to Facebook officials for copyright infringement.
Anderson said he’s not sure the dog sled racing organization can claim copyright on the word "Iditarod" — the name of an Alaskan town — but said he’s been in talks with their attorney in order to change the name and get the Facebook page back up and running before the 7th annual event.
"They’re an Alaskan sled dog race," Anderson said. "I’m not even a real organization, we’re just doing a fun bar crawl. We’re very, very loosely related."
Anderson said Urban Iditarods in other cities have received similar copyright infringement claims from the Alaskan Iditarod.
"They basically called us idiots and that we were mocking a prestigious event, their dog sled race," Anderson said.
Utah’s pub crawl — which Anderson said may be renamed to the "Urban Idiot Dash" or "Cart Crawl" — attracts costumed teams who race through downtown Salt Lake City pushing decorated shopping carts through a four mile stretch, with stops at "watering holes" along the way.
Anderson said he hopes to have their Facebook page back up by the weekend, but stressed that even if it isn’t, the bar crawl will go forward as planned on March 1. Teams will meet on the northwest corner of 400 South and West Temple at 2 p.m.
