A 30-year-old Layton man was in critical condition Thursday, the day after he inexplicably ran into traffic and was struck by a car.
Layton police Lt. Shawn Horton said that Troy Heiner was walking near 2900 N. Hillfield Road about 9:35 p.m. Wednesday when, despite a companion's warning not to do so, he tried to run across the four-lane road just south of its intersection with Highway 193.
Heiner was hit by a southbound Toyota Corolla. The 31-year-old male driver, who had his three young children — including an infant — in the car with him, told police he did not have time to avoid the collision.
No one in the car, believed to be traveling about 45 mph, was hurt.
Heiner was first taken to Davis Hospital in Layton and then taken by helicopter to Ogden Regional Hospital.
Horton said the accident remained under investigation.
