Weber County authorities are still trying to determine the source of diesel fuel that leaked into the West Haven Canal Saturday morning.
A person walking a dog along the canal at 4700 W. 4400 South about 9:38 a.m. noticed an oily substance in the canal water and reported it. The Weber Fire District, Roy City Fire Department, Weber County Sheriff's Office, West Haven City and Weber-Morgan Health Department responded.
Authorities found the diesel was coming from a storm drain system that empties into the canal. A boom was placed about the drainpipe to capture the small amount of hazardous material. Fire crews will continue to monitor the spill throughout the day.Homes and farmland surround the area. Brandon Thueson, Weber Fire District marshal, said it is illegal to dump hazardous fluids into gutters or storm drains and culprits could face significant fines and be responsible for clean-up costs.
