The Ogden Fire Department announced Friday that it will distribute thousands of new dual-technology smoke alarms to residents currently without them.

Ogden Fire Marshal Kevin Brown said 5,250 of the state-of-the-art alarms — which combine both ionization-based sensors heralded for their responsiveness to flaming fires and photoelectric detectors that better sense smoldering, smoky fires — will be delivered in previously identified lower-income neighborhoods of the city.

Statistics show that residents can reduce their risk of dying in a fire by installing and using smoke detectors in their homes, Brown said.

He said that thanks to recently received grant funds through the federal Assistance to Firefighters program, Ogden firefighters will be knocking doors throughout the community in the coming few weeks to distribute the alarm devices.

For more information on the alarms call OFD’s Fire Prevention Program at 801-629-8074.
