Valentine's flower tags urge Utahns to buckle up

You might find an extra special message along with your bouquet of flowers this week, but it's a little more dire than, say, a Valentine's Day train saying "I Choo-choo-choose you."

Starting Wednesday, florists are putting lenticular tags on their flowers that say "Loves Me" with a fastened seatbelt at one angle, and "Loves Me Not" with an unbuckled belt at the other. It's the latest holiday-themed effort from The Click It Utah campaign to get more Utahns to wear their seat belts.

More than 50 florists are distributing the purple tags, which read "Prove your love, buckle up" on the back. Focus group studies show that people who generally do not wear their seat belts will wear one if a loved one asks them to, according to a news release from the campaign.

"Our loved ones want us to be safe at all times. They urge us to make smart and safe decisions. One of those decisions presents itself every time we step into a vehicle," said Utah Highway Patrol Col. Danny Fuhr in a statement.

During past efforts to save lives, the campaign has hired actors to turn into zombies and scare people in downtown Salt Lake City around Halloween, handed out grilling spatulas and barbecue sauce around Labor Day and placed statuettes of leprechauns in bars around St. Patrick's Day.
