Flood waters have damaged about a dozen homes in a Summit County town.
Four homes along 150 South in Coalville were flooded Sunday, two of them extensively, said Tyler Rowser, spokesman for North Summit Fire District.
One of the significantly damaged homes was flooded with a couple feet of water, and the other had 6 inches of water, added Coalville Mayor Trever Johnson.
"It's been raining the past two days … and the rain came right off the mountain and into town," Rowser said. By Sunday afternoon, the waters proved too much for the open culverts that act as the drainage system in that area.
By 2 p.m., the rain had stopped and the waters were beginning to recede, Rowser said. Volunteers, many of whom the city pulled out of church, were helping sandbag homes and pump water out of others, Rowser added.
"We've had a tremendous response. I've been very humbled," Johnson said. He made four phone calls when the flooding started, and within 45 minutes, 100 people were helping fill sandbags, he said. "I could not have been more proud."
The National Weather Service in Salt Lake City said rain and snow were likely to continue falling over Coalville through Monday morning.
