A BYU student caught in an avalanche died Sunday after she was taken off life support.

Ashleigh Nicole Cox had been snoeshowing with several people near Tibble Fork Reservoir, in American Fork Canyon, when a 50-foot-long slide pushed her into a creek, according to the Utah County Sheriff’s Office. The 21-year-old was trapped for about 40 minutes, and emerged not breathing and with no pulse, said Utah County Sheriff’s Sgt. Spencer Cannon.

The responders were able to get her heart beating again and she was taken to the trauma center at Utah Valley Regional Medical Center. But she remained in "extremely critical" condition and she was removed from life support Sunday afternoon, Cannon said.

The avalanche center forecasted at least a high risk for slides, bordering on extreme, for all of the northern and central Utah mountains throughout the weekend.
