A BYU student's was critically injured Saturday night after she was caught in an avalanche and her heart stopped.
Ashleigh Nicole Cox, 21, was snowshoeing with several people near Tibble Fork Reservoir in American Fork Canyon when, about 5:40 p.m., she was caught in a slide, said Utah County sheriff's Sgt. Spencer Cannon. The avalanche pushed her into a stream, according to the sheriff's office.People in the area tried but were unable to dig her out, Cannon said. Emergency responders arrived and freed the woman after she was buried for about 40 minutes, Cannon said. She emerged not breathing and had no pulse.
By 8:30 p.m., Lone Peak Fire Battalion Chief Joe McRae reported that her heart was beating again and she was being moved to the trauma center at Utah Valley Regional Medical Center. The Utah Avalanche Center forecast a high risk for slides, bordering on extreme, for all of the northern and central Utah mountains throughout the weekend.
