Avalanche: Skier briefly caught in Big Cottonwood Canyon slide

First Published Feb 05 2014 01:06 pm • Last Updated Feb 05 2014 01:53 pm

It was a reminder of the Wasatch Range’s backcountry avalanche danger, but with a fortunate outcome.

A male skier triggered, and was briefly caught, in an avalanche just before noon Wednesday in Big Cottonwood Canyon along the north face of Mount Superior.

Brett Kobernik, a U.S. Forest Service avalanche forecaster, said the extent and depth of the snowslide was not immediately known.

"He was caught and carried an unknown distance, but uninjured," Kobernik said. "No rescue was needed in this case."

Kobernik said the incident took place on Forest Service land and the area was not under any restrictions to skiers at the time.

The Utah Avalanche Center warns that the risk for potentially deadline snowslide was "considerable" going into Thursday for the mountains above Logan and Moab and "moderate" for the remainder of the state, including the area where Wednesday’s incident was reported.
