West Jordan police say a 22-year-old man was killed when his car crashed into a power pole early Tuesday morning.

The accident occurred about 12:40 a.m. on the Old Bingham Highway at 5700 West.

West Jordan police Officer Craig Carroll said the victim was driving a newer model Mercedes sedan at high speed and possibly under the influence of alcohol when it left the roadway.

"He clipped a couple utility poles and then crashed. He was killed on impact," Carroll said.

While the driver was dead at the scene, a male passenger, also 22, was in fair condition at the hospital. He reportedly dragged himself to a nearby TRAX light rail station to get help, despite several broken bones.

Traffic through the accident scene was restricted until wreckage had been cleared about 6 a.m.

The crash also triggered a brief power outage for residents in the area.

The identity of the victim was not being released until his next of kin were notified.
