A 3-year-old boy died Saturday in a five-car crash in Taylorsville.
Police did not disclose the boy's name Saturday night. The man behind the wheel of a Dodge Ram pickup was allegedly driving recklessly on 5400 South, traveling west. By about 8:30 p.m., witnesses were already on the phone with 911 dispatchers about him speeding and driving in and out of traffic when he rear-ended a Subaru stopped for the red light at 1300 West, said Unified Police Lt. Justin Hoyal.
The boy, who was restrained in the Subaru, died.
The crash caused a domino effect, pushing the Subaru into the car in front of it, and so on, until five vehicles were involved in the crash.
The 55-year-old pick-up truck driver got out and tried to blend in with the crowd, Hoyal said. Someone grabbed him and kept hold of him until law enforcement arrived, Hoyal added. Investigators suspect the pickup driver had been drinking, Hoyal said. The man had not been booked into Salt Lake County jail as of 10 p.m.
Besides the boy, two people were injured in the crash and taken to Intermountain Medical Center with serious to minor injuries.
