A Salt Lake City man has been charged with killing his girlfriend's 1-year-old son.

Brian Luther Taylor, 24, was charged Friday in 3rd District Court with first-degree felony murder. If convicted, he could face up to life in prison.

On Dec. 30, Kaela Memmott left her infant son, Xander Toliver, in the care of her boyfriend, Taylor, according to court documents. She was gone for a few minutes when she heard a noise, came back and saw Xander gasping for breath, the documents add.

Taylor picked Xander up, but he was "floppy and unresponsive," the court documents read. Memmott immediately called 911.

Xander was hospitalized and put on life support at Primary Children's Hospital, where he died Jan. 2. The state medical examiner performed an autopsy the next day and determined that Xander had died from intentionally inflicted head trauma, which would have occurred immediately before the baby lost consciousness, according to court documents.

Officers arrested Taylor and booked him into Salt Lake County jail. His bail is set at about $1 million cash.

His first court appearance has not been scheduled yet.
