Neither police nor Jordan School District officials would discuss the exact nature of threats a Bingham High boy made against his school, but they applauded a fellow student who turned him in.
South Jordan police Sgt. Samuel Winkler said Friday that the boy remained in the Salt Lake Valley Detention Center, where he was booked Thursday on suspicion of felony making of a terroristic threat.
The specific threats — whether toward an individual, the school as a whole, or if they mentioned either shooting or explosives — remained a mystery; the teen's arrest came after a female student reported his Wednesday night comments on a social media site.
Bingham High officials referred all questions to the district's office, where spokeswoman Sandra Riesgraf praised the girl for "doing the right thing" in reporting the boy's statements.
"This is what we tell our students to do all the time, that they have the power to protect each other," Riesgraf said. "She didn't know if these threats were credible or not, but she called police and they were on it immediately.
"Our students are the eyes and ears of their schools, and that includes on social media these days," she added.
In addition to locating and arresting the boy, SJPD detectives and uniformed officers were dispatched to Bingham High on Thursday to make sure the campus and its students and staff were safe, Winkler said.
Officers continued Friday to patrol the area of the high school as a precaution.
