With suicide the ninth leading cause of death in Davis County, there are numerous survivors coping with the loss of a loved one. To help them with the trauma, the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) is sponsoring a new suicide survivor support group.
The first meeting will be held from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the Davis County Central Library auditorium, 155 Wasatch Drive in Layton. The group will meet the second Thursday of every month at the same time and place.
The sessions will be led by a trained volunteer who also is a suicide survivor.
"Survivors learn that they are not alone as they share their stories and learn from others in a safe, supportive environment," said Isa Perry, community outreach planner for the Davis County Health Department.
Last year, Davis County health agencies and community organizations set suicide prevention as one of their top priorities. The survivor support group is part of that effort.
