Firefighters quickly extinguished a fire threatening to engulf a semi-trailer rig loaded with lumber early Monday morning on Interstate 15 near Roy, but the effort left an on-ramp treacherously icy for hours.

Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Todd Royce said the scene, near the 5600 South entrance to I-15, was not cleared until 2 a.m. Monday.

The blaze was reported about 10:30 p.m. Sunday. By the time troopers arrived the truck's axle was fully in flames and the fire was within moments of spreading to the lumber, which was stacked on a flatbed trailer.

Fire crews doused the flames, but temperatures in the teens froze the water sprayed on the blaze, making the on-ramp too icy to use.

Utah Department of Transportation crews responded, salting down the slippery lanes.

No injuries were reported.
