A baby died Thursday from injuries police say were inflicted by his mother's boyfriend.

Xander Toliver, 1, died at about 5:40 p.m. Thursday, according to the Salt Lake City Police Department. Toliver was hospitalized Monday in very critical condition. He was put on life support at Primary Children's Hospital.

Police say Brian Taylor, 24, injured Tolivar by inflicting "major head trauma" while the two were left alone. Taylor — described by police as the boyfriend of Tolivar's mother — was arrested Monday and booked into jail on suspicion of second-degree felony child abuse.

The Salt Lake City Police Department said Thursday Toliver's death would likely enhance the charges against Taylor.
