An Oklahoma man died Thursday near St. George when he tried to walk across Interstate 15 and was hit by an SUV.

The accident happened about 1:41 p.m. when John Madison, 41, tried to cross the freeway just south of St. George, according to the Utah Highway Patrol. As Madison walked or ran from the west side of the freeway to the east side, a Toyota Highlander hit him.

Madison hit his head against the vehicle's windshield in the impact, then was launched into the air, according to UHP. He landed in the middle of the freeway.

Madison was driven to Dixie Regional Medical Center, where he died from his injuries. The accident partially closed the freeway for about 45 minutes.

Police do not know why Madison was trying to cross the freeway. The driver of the SUV was not impaired, police report.
