A Utah State Parks ranger rescued a duck hunter and his dog after they fell through the ice near Antelope Island Monday morning.
Parks spokeswoman Hollie Brown said that 20-year-old Ray Lewis of Clearfield, had walked off the causeway, near the entrance to Antelope Island State Park, about 8 a.m. Monday to aid his dog, who had fallen through ice approximately 2 inches thick.
The water was over 5 feet deep, and he struggled for about 20 minutes to keep both himself and the dog afloat before Ranger Chris Quatrale was flagged down by Lewis' two hunting companions. The ranger threw a line to Lewis.
Quatrale and the hunting companions then pulled both Lewis and his dog to shore. Davis County emergency workers transported Lewis to Davis Hospital and Medical Center to be checked for hypothermia.
Lewis and dog both were expected to be fine.
However, she said the incident does underscore the wisdom of checking ice thoroughly before walking on it.
