Layton police Sunday were investigating a murder-suicide involving a husband and wife.

Police said they responded about 1:35 a.m. to a home located at 580 N. Franklin Road after the couple's 20-year-old daughter called 911 to report her parents, Bret and Jill Pepper, were arguing and she heard what sounded like loud bangs.

The woman checked on her parents and found both of them with gunshot wounds, officers said.

Police said it appears Bret Pepper, 39, shot Jill Pepper, 37, with a handgun before shooting himself.

Police said the 20-year-old was home from college at the time. The couple also have two sons, 10 and 13, who were home. The children were taken from the home by family members.
